It started with
Lunch
But it was never really about the lunch.
It was about what made the moment possible.
READ HOPE'S FULL STORY
There are certain moments with Heart for Africa that stay with you long after they’ve occurred. One of those moments happened this June during our Celebrating 20 Years Trip.
A group from the trip was visiting a local church where Project Canaan helps provide meals for children in the surrounding community. Hope, one of our oldest girls at Project Canaan, joined them that day. While there, Hope met another young girl around her age. They talked as everyone waited for lunch to be served, with the youngest children being fed first.
As they continued talking, Hope realized something—the girl was hungry.
Without saying much, Hope walked back to the van, picked up the lunch that had been packed for her, and handed it to her new friend.
When the team first realized what had occurred, they wondered what to do about lunch for Hope. But the more they thought about it, the more they realized the story wasn’t really about a lunch.
It was about what made the moment possible.
Hope didn’t give because she had extra. She gave because she knew she’d have another meal soon. She knew someone would care for her. She knew she was safe.
That confidence was built over years of faithful generosity.
Hope came to Project Canaan as a little girl who needed what every child needs: a safe place to belong, people who would love her consistently, and the security of knowing her needs would be met. Because of people like you, she found those things.
She learned she didn’t have to wonder where her next meal would come from. She learned she wasn’t alone. She learned there would be enough.
And that’s one of the greatest gifts generosity can give a child.
Generosity provides food, education, and a safe home, but it also changes the way a child sees the world. When a child no longer has to wonder if there will be enough tomorrow, they can begin to believe there is enough to share today.
That’s what we saw in Hope.
She opened her hands not because she had more than she needed, but because years of faithful generosity had created a ripple she couldn’t help but continue. Someone started the ripple for Hope. And without anyone asking her to, she started another for someone else.
As we think about year-end and all God has done through Heart for Africa over the last twenty years, Hope’s story captures something beautiful about your partnership. Your generosity doesn’t stop with the person who receives it. It ripples into the lives they touch. You’re investing not only in today’s needs, but in tomorrow’s leaders, mothers, fathers, neighbors, and generous hearts.
As you consider your year-end gift, we hope you’ll think about Hope – not simply because she gave away her lunch, but because her story shows us what faithful generosity can ripple into over time. To us, that’s The Ripple of Generosity.
And we can’t think of a more beautiful picture of what your partnership with Heart for Africa makes possible.
Will you continue the ripple with a generous year-end gift?
